I recently came across this old cartoon and was reminded again of how important it is for us to be committed to integrity in relation to our use of copyrighted material. The timing was interesting since our church was just notified that we are required to report our copyright activity for the next six months. For over 20 years, we have been members of the Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI). Our $350/yr. license fee covers the use of copyrighted songs sung by our congregation in worship services, smaller classes and children’s ministries throughout our campus each week. Once, every three years, we are required to track our usage and report to CCLI. They are then able to calculate how much royalty to pay the copyright owners (usually the composer/song writer) for each song we sing.
This is a tremendous blessing to us as a church. Without CCLI, we’d have to contact each copyright owner of every song we sing (unless it is Public Domain, like some of our older hymns) and then pay a royalty fee for each time the words to a song are projected on a screen and sung by a group of people. What a pain! This is why I’m thankful for the service that CCLI provides. Even though it’s a lot of work during the six months we have to report, still, it is far less work than what we’d have to do without them! So, if you are projecting words of songs on a screen for any of our ministries for the next six months please keep track of them and let’s talk soon. I have already contacted everyone that I know of. However, if I missed you, please let me know. I appreciate your part in helping us keep our commitments to CCLI and ……. keeping me out of jail!!!!
